I have just been to the Alexander McQueen exhibition Savage Beauty at the V & A in London.  I don’t profess to know that much about either McQueen or fashion, but I know creative genius and beauty when I see it.  I urge you to go.  Not only because it is important to recognise the phenomenal talent that was Alexander McQueen, who added new depth to the world of fashion by creating - effectively -  thought-provoking, performance art.  But also because, let’s face it, we aren’t, most of us, in the habit of getting up that close to such finely...

Clone towns and Independents

There has been much debate in the local press about the forthcoming Riverside Cinema complex in Bedford.  Even our dear Bedford Clanger had something to say about it.  It got me thinking about the whole issue of local, independent & quirky versus mainstream.   In Bedford we don’t really have Arthouse cinema and for many the thought of another mainstream cinema, complete with “chain store” restaurants, when there’s already a cinema showing little other than blockbusters, spells doom to those who hope our town to be something other than a clone town.   The reality is possibly a little more complex...

Hello, I’d just like to introduce myself.  I’m the new girl here at Planet and am taking over the blogging slot once inhabited by the lovely Clare (who now works MILES away, by the way, at Seventh Heaven next door!)  I have to say, I’m feeling already the real sense of community in this old Victorian arcade where we all reside.  As what has to be Bedford’s more tasteful undercover shopping venue, it does have some of the quirkier shops on offer in the town, with the aforementioned, aesthetically perfect Seventh Heaven patisserie (you have to go there, to look...

I bid you adieu

Clare Phillips adieu goodbye

Dear reader, this is my last post. I’ll keep it short and sweet. I’ve had an amazing time here at Boutique Planet HQ and the team are great to work for. It’s been a real learning experience and it’s a lovely feeling to know I’m surrounded by likeminded people in this town. So many of our wonderful customers and friends believe in local and independent shops and services making a big difference in the community. I’ll be keeping that mind set when I move. The enthusiasm is infectious and I want to keep that always. Thank you for reading this...

New season alert

Clare Phillips bird chocolate new collection spring

Hi Everyone! I am in a quandary, the long awaited Ice Cream maker still hasn’t arrived, I’m being told that Yodel have lost it somewhere along the line. I’m an impatient woman at the best of times but when the end goal involves homemade ice cream I get a little hysterical. Don’t they understand that as much as I love the new eating program, I need sugar to fuel my ramblings on this here site! As a matter of public service I’ve been eating chocolate in the shop so I can remain level headed. I do it all for you...
